Nominal federal, state, and local revenue [census.gov, whitehouse.gov] as a percentage of nominal GDP [measuringworth.org]. State/local only available since 1890.

That is to say, from 1790 until 1913, excluding the Civil War, the cost/size of government was less than 10% of what was produced, whereas today it is around 40% and rising.
